The 21st Century Genetics story so far…21st Century Genetics P/L, established in 1990, by the current owners Brian Leslie and Daryl Brown both of whom have a lifetime of experience in the dairy industry. Brian Leslie is regarded as one of the world’s premier dairy cattle auctioneers and he is also a noted international dairy cattle judge. He is a partner in Leslie Farms, a large Holstein stud located at Arcadia, near Shepparton in Victoria. Daryl Brown has over 40 years industry experience and is the manager of 21st Century Genetics. Both Daryl and Brian were auctioneers with Gippsland and Northern, before forming the successful partnership of Brown and Leslie, which was subsequently sold to Elders. Both have had an interest in the AB industry for many years and some of their ventures include part/whole ownership of the proven sires – SHORMAR, CURLY and MBSL. Brown and Leslie were also the founders of International Dairy Week, which is now established as the premier dairy cattle event in Australia and attended by over 20 countries every year. In the early 90’s, Daryl joined RAB, whilst Brian continued with Elders. In the mid 90’s, Daryl made the move to Alta Genetics and Brian joined Alta Australia in investing in local bulls to sample in Australia and overseas. It is interesting to note that in 2001, the duo selected five Australian Holstein and five Australian Jerseys sires to sample in the GO Australia Progeny Test program. Four years later, the #1 APR sire for both breeds was the result! Proof you don’t have to be the biggest to be the best! In January 2003, Brown and Leslie acquired the noted Alta Genetics distributorship and located their office at the Essendon Airport, followed two years later with a purchase of the new factory warehouse at Tullamarine. Various agencies/distributorships have been added to 21st Century Genetics’ team of champions, including the Duke of Westminster owned Cogent Breeders from the UK. 21st Century Genetics became the first AB company within Australia to market sexed sorted semen. Four years later their competitors are now trying to catch up. 21st Century Genetics is backed by Australia’s premier breeding advisors/herd evaluators. Their exclusive Alta program has added over 150 herds in two years and continues to grow at a rapid rate. The 21st Century Genetics sales and area representatives are some of the most respected cow men/women in Australia. Our office ‘go to’ person is Julian Pick, who is an extremely talented and valued member of 21st Century Genetics. Julian has been with 21st/Alta for seven years and prior to that was with the Holstein Association.
