Gippsland Daughter Inspection Tour 2008

 WHAT A GREAT DAY!

 For the 2nd year in a row 21st Century Genetics hosted a tremendous daughter tour.  In all over 250 daughters of 21st sires were inspected across six farms. Daughters on display included AltaColin, Jonkheer, Lucente, Lucky Mike, Principal, Jesther, Shaker and Lancelot daughters.

The highlights of the tour included:

# A tremendous line of AltaColin heifers in the large commercial operation of Rob and Jan Mortlock at Yanakie was the starting point of the tour. Whilst only freshly calved these heifers exhibited the desirable rump structure and super rear udders that AltaColin is renowned for. Something obvious already was the high components that the AltaColin daughters had.

# Lukyx family farm was revisited after the success and quality of last year’s heifers on display. Their heifers were in great form with the herd currently averaging around the 34 litre mark. A group of 40 plus Lucky Mike on their 1st and 2nd lactations were extremely even. Their extra power, sloped rumps and welded on udders were a feature. Other daughters on display included some super wet AltaColin daughters, tremendous uddered Lucente daughters and a few daughters by the Jocko son in Jonkheer.

# Zuidema Family once again had a tremendous line of two year old heifers, this year by Lucky Mike and Lucente. With over 20 plus daughters of each on display they certainly attracted plenty of positive comments from the large crowd in attendance. The consistency of the udders on Lucente daughters and that extra strength of Lucky Mike were again very evident.

# One of Gippsland’s highest production herd’s in Les, Dianne and Russell White at Leongatha was an eye opener for all present. With a herd average of 10,000 for 300 cows this farm really does put all bulls to the test. On display was some great shaped young AltaColin daughters. Again high components were a feature as was the super rear udders and the desirable rump structure that we associate with AltaColin.

# One of the great cow men in Gippsland in Jim Watson together with his wife Jenny had a memorable group of heifers on display. As a result of the AltaMate program there was 6 daughters by the Cogent bull Aquila Patron Lucente. These soft uddered heifers with great body shape were an outstanding group on the day. Also present were 2 heifers by the Alta bull in Lucky Mike who were milking very hard.

# The final stop for this great day was Beverly Farms of Poowong. Run by Stuart and his wife Kellie this batch calving operation had 4-5 different daughter groups on display. These heifers as result of the AltaMate program were by Lucente, CBPrincipal, CBShaker, Lancelot, Jesther and Ramos. The quality of udders on the Principal, tremendous production and shape of the Jesther and consistency of the Lucente daughters was certainly a feature.

In total over 90 people were in attendance across the six farms. The heifers were extremely well grown and in great form on the day. The group was asked to select the best individual cow on the day as well as the best particular daughter group on a particular farm. This was overjudged by the larger than life Peter Clarke from Platinum Genetics and Hayley Boyd of 21st Century Genetics who is one of the best young judges in the country.

The winning cow on the day was a 2nd calf Lucky Mike daughter at the Luykx Family in Inverloch.

The winning group of heifers on the day was from the Watson family operation in Poowong with the super consistent Lucente daughter group.
